![]() Fight sequences feel appropriately big and take place in a number of interesting locations with plenty of blazing action and destruction. Sets are large, lavishly detailed, and the expert use of lighting sets each scene excellently. The animation in general is smooth and very well done. But the extreme often cartoony character designs can take some getting used to, particularly given the dark overtones the show quickly dives into, the increasingly brutal manners in which Titan kills Mutraddi, and the shocking imagery the viewer becomes exposed to. There are long establishing shots, the punctuated repetition of scenes and/or actions, and the deliberate lack of music in places to set tone (think Dexter’s Lab). Characters are highly stylized and abstracted representations of their real-life counter-parts. It’s a show full to the gills with concepts and it mostly balances them out… but like every epic, there are flaws.īeing a product of Genndy Tartakovsky, the show holds true to his signature artistic and animation patterns. And the shifts from high school comedy to bloody alien war scenes can be jarring, but largely that’s the point. Only truly hitting its stride around episode 6. True, the series does take a few episodes to find its feet. Modula has captured the king and, wanting to eliminate the Royal line to quash hopes of rebellion, sends monsters down to earth to kill or capture the princess.īut don’t worry kids! Because Ilana, Lance, and Octus can fight the monsters with their robotic armor. Meanwhile, Galaluna is undergoing a hostile takeover via a monstrous race known as the Mutraddi which are being led by General Modula. They land in Sherman, Illinois, taking up residence and the identity of three average high school students whereupon they face the challenges of everyday life. Princess Ilana of the alien world Galaluna flees to earth with an aggressive Corporal named Lance, and a highly advanced robot named Octus to serve as her body guards. If my all time award for both tightest and smartest premise for an action cartoon goes to GI Joe Renegades… Then Symbionic Titan at least gets a ribbon for having one of the more long-winded ones. While originally planned as a long running series, a combination of contract disputes and a lack of a tie-in toyline led to the program unfortunately not being renewed after its initial order of 20 episodes and the project now lies abandoned.
